How Often Should You See a Dental Hygienist? A Dentist's Guide

When it comes to knowing how often to see a dental hygienist, we recommend around every 3-6 months. Of course, this will depend heavily on your personal risk and current situation. When you visit us, we’ll be able to advise you on how often to book in with our hygienist, based on your current health.

In this blog, we’ll be offering more insight into appointments with the dental hygienist and what you need to be aware of when deciding when to book your visits.

If you’re not sure whether you should book an appointment with our hygienist here at Darren Bywater, then read on to find out more.

How often should you see a dental hygienist?

There are many key variables that can influence how often you choose to see a dental hygienist. Some of the most common factors are:

  • Gum disease history
  • Diabetes
  • Smoking/Vaping
  • Orthodontic appliances
  • Implants
  • Pregnancy
  • Low-risk patients who are looking for professional cleaning.

For low-risk patients, you may choose to leave 6-12 months between hygienist visits. If you have implants or an orthodontic appliance such as Invisalign, then every 3-6 months is advised.

If your dentist states you are high-risk - for example, you’re currently having treatment for gum disease, or you’re a regular smoker - then every 4-12 weeks may be needed until further notice.

Again, we always recommend speaking to your dentist to offer you a more accurate time frame for your hygienist appointments.

What does a dental hygienist actually do?

The hygienist is separate from your regular dentist visit, but both complement each other. By booking in for your regular check-ups and regular hygienist visits, you are proactively taking care of your overall oral health.

When coming in for your regular dental checkup with your dentist, the appointment will focus on:

  • Examining teeth, gums, and soft tissue for signs of decay, disease, or oral cancer
  • Checking existing fillings, crowns, or other restorative work for wear or damage
  • Taking X-rays where needed to spot problems below the surface
  • Assessing bite, jaw function, and overall oral health
  • Identifying issues that need treatment and referring on to a hygienist or specialist care

When seeing one of our hygienists, your appointment will focus on:

  • Scale and polish to remove plaque and tartar (calculus) that a toothbrush can't shift, especially at the gum line and between teeth
  • Deep cleaning below the gum line to prevent or manage gum disease (periodontitis)
  • Stain removal from tea, coffee, red wine, or smoking
  • Personalised advice on brushing technique, flossing, and interdental cleaning
  • Monitoring gum health over time and catching early signs of gum disease before it progresses

If you feel like you could benefit from a deep clean or are worried about early stages of gum disease, book an appointment with our hygienist today.

Why regular hygienist visits matter more than people realise

Seeing a dental hygienist is one of the best ways to avoid gum disease and other health issues that have been linked to poor oral health.

Although your dentist can diagnose any issues, the hygienist will often be the best option for specialist treatment. If you have signs of gum disease, you may be referred to our hygienist for additional care and to offer you a more tailored treatment plan.

Gum disease is not just the UK’s leading cause of adult tooth loss; it has also been linked to other health issues such as Alzheimers, heart disease and diabetes management. Therefore, taking preventative action isn’t just about your oral health; it can help you take better care of your overall health.

Signs you might need to see a hygienist sooner

Wondering what signs you need to look out for when deciding whether to book your hygienist appointment?

  • Bleeding gums when brushing or flossing - often dismissed as normal or simply a result of brushing too hard, but it can be an early sign of gingivitis or early stages of gum disease. A hygienist will be able to confirm and offer a professional clean before it progresses any further.
  • Persistent bad breath - ongoing bad breath that doesn’t improve with regular brushing can be linked to bacteria trapped below the gumline or between teeth. A scale and polish removes the build-up that will be causing this, offering fresher breath from your first visit.
  • Visible tartar build-up - when plaque hardens into tartar, it can’t be brushed away at home. This is when you need to book in with the hygienist to help remove the tartar and prevent further build-up.
  • Sensitivity around the gumline - another sign of early gum disease, gum recession or thinning enamel near the gum line. A hygienist will be able to pinpoint the cause and recommend the right approach for you.
  • Starting orthodontic treatment such as Invisalign or fixed braces - a hygiene visit before your orthodontic treatment begins is recommended, to ensure that your teeth and gums are in optimal health, since braces and aligners can make plaque easier to clean around.
