Tooth whitening for Derby, Leicester, Nottingham and Loughborough in the East Midlands
Teeth whitening is a fast, effective and pain-free way of improving a person's smile and as such it is one of the fastest growing and most popular cosmetic dentistry procedures. Different techniques can be used but the underlying procedure for teeth whitening is similar in all cases; a bleaching compound applied to the teeth in conjunction with a special dental light source which catalyses or accelerates the whitening process.
Teeth whitening can be used on its own or in combination with other cosmetic procedures to form "Hollywood" smiles or full "smilemakeovers".
Why have teeth whitening?
Many people are born with dark coloured teeth whilst others experience staining or darkening over time. This can be exacerbated through the consumption of staining food or drink (e.g. red wine and tea) or through smoking. Much of this staining can be reversed rapidly and painlessly using modern teeth whitening methods.
The process
The cosmetic dentist will apply the bleaching compound to the teeth using a special tray system. Oxygen is liberated from the bleaching medium, penetrates the surface structure of the tooth and helps reduce staining painlessly and without causing structural damage. During the process, a special dental light source may be used to accelerate the teeth bleaching process. The latest techniques, sometimes called power whitening, can be done in a couple of hours but more typically the process is completed over two or three weeks with two or more visits to the dentist. This may occasionally be supplemented with interim treatment at home.
How long does teeth whitening last?
Many variables affect the longevity of the process, in particular the type of food and drink consumed but typically treatment should be expected to last several years and can be "topped up" as needed.
In summary, teeth whitening is a rapid and relatively cost effective way of improving your smile. It is non-invasive, painless and can be topped-up in future as required. In a small number of cases slight sensitivity has been reported but this is typically short-lived.
