Prosthodontics at our Derby Practice

What is the role of the Prosthodontist at Darren Bywater Dental Care?

Dentistry has many different fields relating to different aspects of dental care. Most of these are relatively run of the mill for most people but there are cases where more extensive work is needed and this is where special training is especially important in ensuring the best possible outcome for our patients.

One area in which we can benefit those who need it at our Derby dental practice is in the field of prosthodontics and we have a resident prosthodontist based at our practice. This area of specialist dentistry actually encompasses many others and is essentially a field dedicated to replacing teeth and the supporting areas with a range of procedures including but not limited to crowns, dental implants and bridges.

There are a number of reasons why people may come to us needing these treatments. In some cases congenital disorders may have caused problems including difficulties in eating and speaking due to the problems in this area. Other cases include accidents and trauma where severe injuries to the area may have been sustained.

As well as the obvious injuries these can cause, the long term effects can include difficulty with speech, chewing and even in some cases swallowing. By using a variety of prosthetics, depending on each individual situation, in most cases we can restore the patient’s ability to function in these areas once more.

Amongst the procedures used in this field are both partial and full dentures, dental bridges, crowns and dental implants. These may be used individually or in a combination depending on each individual case which will be fully assessed by our specialist prosthodontist prior to any procedure taking place.

Although many of these procedures are quite invasive, for those who have suffered trauma, they also play a large part in their sometimes long road to recovery. The ability to eat a wide variety of foods once again also helps to ensure that they obtain the correct nutrition to help speed the recovery along.

In some cases, one procedure may support another. A good example of this is with dental implants. Whilst these can be placed individually to replace a lost tooth, they are also commonly used where a full arch of teeth have been lost and previously dentures would have been fitted. By using a procedure known as ‘teeth in a day’ or an ‘all on 4’, they can also be used to attach a fixed bridge to replace a full arch. This processes uses just 4 dental implants and ensures that the arch of teeth remains fixed firmly in place making them both secure and easy to care for.

Accidents are by their very nature traumatic, but with the skills of our resident prosthodontist, we are sure that we can dramatically make a positive change to the lives of those who have experienced it.
