Keeping our Derby dental patients safe.
As you might expect, operating a hygienic dental practice is one of the key requisites for any dentist. Whilst hygiene standards might vary across the world; in the west, and the UK in particular, the standards that have to be met are very high indeed. There is a good reason for this. Cross infection is a very serious matter and can, in worse case scenarios, result in severe illnesses. Even lesser illnesses, such as minor stomach bugs though, can cause time to be taken from work and therefore need be eradicated as far as possible.
Cross infection
Cross infection occurs when microorganisms are transferred between people either directly or indirectly. So theoretically, such transfer could occur via dental equipment which is not thoroughly cleaned. Not only this, but the dental team themselves can also breath in organisms during a procedure, especially where a high speed drill is used to displace decay for example. Poor use of sterilisation facilities and incorrect wearing of masks and gloves, or not using them at all, may well result in cross infection.
Prevention
Restoring oral health for patients with badly compromised teeth and gums in Derby.
Nearly all of us will have some form of dental issues during our lives. In most instances, these will be relatively straightforward and will simply need a filling, or perhaps an individual dental crown to repair a broken tooth. These general maintenance dental procedures, for most people, are needed only occasionally and are part and parcel of life.
For some people however, their dental needs are much more serious and need urgent and intensive attention.
Failed oral health
Whilst some severe damage can be done to the mouth through accidents; in many cases, it is simply neglect which has caused the problem to be so acute. This especially occurs in patients who suffer anxiety about their dental visits, and, accordingly, often go for very long periods without even having so much as a check up. It is usually only when the pain becomes severe that these patients finally come to our Derby dental practice for treatment.
We can only re-iterate to nervous patients, that avoiding your dental appointments will most likely result in poor and worsening dental health. We are very sympathetic to patients who suffer from dental anxiety and will do all that we can to put you at ease during your visit to our practice in Allestree, near Derby.
Restoration
Take advantage of our special offer to see how you could improve your smile.
Have you ever wondered if you could benefit from cosmetic dental treatment but didn’t want to spend a lot of money simply finding out? Well, now you can. We are currently running a special offer for new adult patients at our Derby dental practice. This offers an excellent opportunity for anyone curious about how they might look following one of the cosmetic dental treatments that we offer our patients here in the East Midlands.
Modern practice
Our state of the art practice in Derby, offers patients an excellent way to see in advance, how they might look following cosmetic procedures such as teeth whitening. In fact, whitening is a very popular procedure as it is painless, effective and produces near instant results. As well as our cosmetic treatments, we are also pleased to offer general dental advice, although please note that routine dental checks are not included in the special offer.
The treatments
Natural does not always mean tooth friendly.
With wider access to information, more and more people across Derbyshire are concerned about what they eat and where it comes from. Because of this, an increasing number of people try to eat as naturally as they can in a world of mass production and convenience food.
Whilst this is not necessarily a bad thing, there can be an assumption that everything that is natural is good for you, and, from our perspective at Darren Bywater Dental Care in Derby, for your oral health too.
Honey
Honey is a good example of this as it is widely used in place of sugar, which is coming under increasing scrutiny from many quarters.
Whilst the criticisms of sugar is a good thing from a dental point of view, as sugar is responsible for much decay, the use of honey as a substitute also deserves investigation.
In fact, in some ways, honey may be worse for your teeth than sugar. Because, by nature, it is a sticky substance, it can stick to and between your teeth more easily, especially if consumed in its natural state rather than in a cup of tea, for example.
This can lead to dental decay if a good oral health regimen is not followed. This should certainly include flossing to help remove particles of foods and sugars that have become lodged between the teeth.
Bacteria also feed on these tiny particles and, if allowed to increase, can lead to gingivitis or progressively more serious forms of gum disease.
Fruits
How spreading your costs can help to keep your mouth healthy and give you a great smile.
At Darren Bywater Dental Care, we understand that sometimes, money is not always available to do the things that we want, and that we may have to save first, before we buy something.
For some items, this isn’t a problem and the wait can, perhaps, even make us enjoy our purchase even more when it finally arrives.
When it comes to dental care for the whole family though, sometimes it is not possible to wait and treatment needs to be done promptly to prevent further discomfort or damage.
Oral health care
As we know, maintaining good oral health is key to avoiding most dental procedures. Because of this, our plan focuses on the preventative side of things which will hopefully helps to avoid the need for invasive dental treatments.
Regular check ups and examinations, as well as visits to the hygienist at our Derby dental practice, mean that there is every chance that slow forming dental problems such as gum disease and tooth decay can be avoided, or, at least, nipped in the bud with minor dental care.
Discounts
How the use of modern orthodontics can benefit more than just your smile.
When people think of dental braces, or orthodontics to give them their correct term; they usually associate them with the cosmetic benefits that they can bring.
Whilst the cosmetic benefits are significant; for example, a great smile and, in many cases, an improvement in confidence, there are a number of important benefits to our Derby patients which are more than simply cosmetic.
Causes of misaligned teeth
At Darren Bywater Dental Care in Derby, we see many patients who’s teeth are misaligned teeth due to a variety of reasons. Among the more common ones are crowded teeth caused by having too small a mouth. This causes the teeth to move and overlap.
A difference in jaw sizes between the top and bottom jaws can also result in an overbite or underbite, where one set of teeth extends in front of the other. Many of these problems are genetic, rather than a result of any lack of dental care.
Where the front teeth protrude, this may well be the result of thumb sucking during the early years or even the prolonged use of a pacifier.
Problems caused
Why Invisalign is so popular with our Derby dental patients.
Although some cases of uneven teeth may require the use of different types of dental braces; in the many cases, where appropriate, Invisalign is the preferred method at Darren Bywater Dental Care.
Whilst most other modern adult orthodontics offer a level of discretion by using teeth coloured wires and brackets, Invisalign uses a completely different method altogether.
Instead of being attached to the teeth using wiring and brackets, “Invisalign” is a series of transparent ‘trays’ that sit over the patient’s teeth and a series of these are used to gradually reposition the teeth to their correct places.
Advantages
Improving your oral health by kicking the habit.
The ‘Stoptober’ campaign is now well and truly over, when the focus of the month was to encourage people to give up smoking for good. This is a worthwhile campaign for many good reasons but now that it’s over, statistics suggest that a significant number of people will have started smoking again, such is the grip of the so-called “evil weed”.
At Darren Bywater Dental Care, we would like to use this opportunity to encourage our patients from all over Derbyshire not to abandon the quest to stop smoking as the benefits of success are really worth the effort.
Discoloured teeth
Allaying concerns about this tooth saving procedure.
Of all the many dental procedures, it is probably the prospect of root canal treatment which seems to cause the most concern for patients. As experienced dentists based in Derby with a detailed knowledge of the treatment, we know that the procedure doesn’t really deserve the scary reputation that it has gained over the years. Indeed, with modern equipment and anaesthetics, we are able to minimise any discomfort for our patients.
With this in mind, we thought we would offer some answers to common questions about “root canal” asked at Darren Bywater Dental Care.
1. What actually is a root canal?
A closer look at our facilities and procedures.
Although the issue of health and safety can raise eyebrows in the UK, with accusations of overkill; in terms of procedures which take place in a medical environment, including a dental surgery, health and safety is an extremely important issue indeed.
Because our dentists see a number of patients each day, the risk of passing an infection from one person to another is, like in any other public service, potentially quite high. However, at Darren Bywater Dental Care in Derby, we have stringent measures in place to address any potential issues that may arise and continually put our patients’ safety at the very top of our agenda.
