Safety at the dentist
Health and safety at our Derby dental practice is number one priority
When you think about it, we put a lot of trust in our dentist. There is a large potential for both pain and infection if procedures are not carried out correctly. Because of this, the Darren Bywater Dental Care practice takes this issue very seriously and works hard to ensure that you have not only a successful visit but a safe one too. One of the biggest concerns for most of our patients is that of cross infection and to that end, we follow the practices that are specified by the British Dental Association Good Practice Scheme as well as other national organisations that focus on this matter.
To ensure your safety, all dental staff at our Derby practice are fully trained and continue to receive ongoing training whilst employed by us. We also invest in top quality equipment and keep this up to date as necessary.
The most important factor in controlling cross infection is cleanliness and to aid this, we use disposable materials where this is practical and possible and ensure that all other equipment is properly and thoroughly sterilised after each use.
Our sterilisers not only clean equipment but are specially designed to kill all germs through high temperature heat treatment. We also ensure that all working areas of our practice are kept thoroughly clean at all times.
When a dental procedure, from a check up to a dental implant, is undertaken, all staff will wear both gloves and masks. These are fully disposed off after the procedure.
Our X-rays are also taken using a lower level of radiation than is commonly found in standard x-rays. These are commonly used prior to the placing of dental implants for example, to ensure exact positioning.
As well as our strict hygiene standards, we do our best to inform patients of situations where they should postpone a visit. It can be tempting to just ‘get on with it’ whilst suffering from a cold, but this both makes it hard for the dentist to perform the procedure efficiently as well as raising the risk of infection amongst staff and patients alike. Recent advice also suggests that those with cold sores should re-arrange an appointment when it has cleared to prevent infections from spreading.
We believe that our cosmetic dental treatments are amongst the best in the region and we have built up a good reputation over many years. It is important to us, and for our patients, that we keep this reputation and our cross infection policies ensure that our patients will not only leave the practice with a great new smile but also re-assured in the knowledge that the procedure has been safely performed to the highest standards.
