Dental Implants – The Procedure
Dental implant treatment is available at Darren Bywater Dental Care for patients looking for the most natural and innovative smile restoration possible in modern dentistry. Replacing both the tooth root and the visible tooth above the gum, dental implants are an exceptional choice for replacing missing teeth.
Dental Implant Treatment Starts With A Consultation
Dental implant treatment begins with an extensive consultation at our well-equipped clinic in Derby. The consultation is our chance to check your suitability for treatment and to provide you with all the information you need about implants and alternative treatments, to ensure you are able to make an informed decision. It is also your opportunity to ask questions and gain an understanding of everything involved in the treatment, so you can be sure about making the best possible choice for the future of your smile.
During your consultation we will:
- Perform an oral examination to check your overall oral health
- Perform a CT scan and X-rays to check your bone density
- Discuss your treatment expectations
- Discuss lifestyle habits that may affect treatment outcome
- Discuss alternatives to dental implants
- Answer any questions you may have
- Speak to you about sedation options
- Explain what the recovery period involves
- Give you a detailed treatment plan with transparent pricing
- Plan impressions of your gums for your dental bridge/ crowns/ dentures if treatment is agreed
The consultation for dental implants is crucial and it is important that you feel comfortable asking questions. We are here to help provide you with all the information you need!
Advanced Technology For Effective Implant Treatment
Here at our Derby clinic we have invested in a 3D CT scanning machine to ensure that the treatment is as effective as possible. We believe that implant treatment should not go ahead without a 3D scan of the jaw being completed first and we use the information to ensure the precision and safety of the implant process.
In other clinics, a scan may need to be paid for and taken elsewhere at a higher cost to the patient. However, we have invested in this technology ‘in house’ to reduce cost and time, investing in the most efficient and cost-effective experience for you, here at Darren Bywater Dental Care.
As well as the CT scanner we also have a chairside milling machine. This is an important tool used to create crowns and bridges for implants quickly. It means we can create crowns, bridges and other important dental fixtures ‘in-house’, saving you even more money and time.
The Dental Implant Process
Pre-Treatment
Our top priority when you come in for your implant treatment is to ensure you are completely comfortable before we do any work and this starts from the moment you come through the door. We work hard to ensure all staff are friendly and informative, and that our clinic is a clean and comfortable place to be.
Once you come in to the treatment room, we will help you feel comfortable and relaxed in the treatment chair, with local anaesthetic and the option for IV or oral sedation if you have pre-arranged that during your consultation.
During Treatment
Where we need to extract teeth before we place implants we can sometimes do this on the day of implant surgery. We will do this first and then completely clean your mouth to minimise the presence of bacteria.
Once you are ‘implant-ready’ we use special tools to place the implants in the jawbone. Our 3D scanner will have already been used to map out the exact placement of your implants to ensure security and minimise the risk of nerve damage. Depending on how many implants you are having, we will place them during this one treatment session, or over a few sessions.
Depending on the type of treatment plan, the implants will then be covered with a flap of skin and the integration with the jaw bone can begin.
The Healing Phase
Your implant healing is done at home over a few months and we will provide you with lots of instructions to ensure the best chance of your implants healing quickly and securely. We are also available to help monitor healing and to check everything is going as it should be during this important phase.
The Final Phase
Once the implants have healed we may need to re-expose them or you may be able to have your permanent replacement teeth added straight away depending on the type of treatment you have had. We will place permanent teeth during this appointment so you can leave with your brand new, complete smile.
Implant Maintenance
Your implant will need routine maintenance to ensure it remains as stable, secure and healthy as possible. Oral health is particularly important as active gum disease can cause problems with dental implants. You will also need to care for implant-retained dentures or bridges just like you care for standard dentures or bridges. Otherwise, good oral hygiene should keep your implants, teeth replacements and mouth healthy and happy long-term. Visiting your Derby dentist regularly is an important part of dental implant maintenance and care.
